• Insulate Pipes: Use foam pipe insulation or heat tape on pipes that are exposed to the cold, especially those in unheated areas like basements, attics, and crawl spaces.

• Seal Cracks and Openings: Check for drafts and seal any cracks or openings in walls, windows, and doors that might let cold air in.

• Keep the Heat On: If you're going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home to maintain a warm environment for your pipes.

• Allow Faucets to Drip: Letting faucets drip slightly can keep water moving through the pipes and reduce the risk of freezing.

• Open Cabinet Doors: Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around plumbing, particularly if your sinks are on exterior walls.

• Disconnect Hoses: Remove and drain garden hoses and shut off the water supply to outdoor faucets.

• Maintain Thermostat Settings: Keep your thermostat set to the same temperature during day and night. If you plan to be away, set it no lower than 55°F (13°C).

• Use Space Heaters: In particularly cold areas of your home, consider using space heaters to keep the temperature up.

• Keep Garage Doors Closed: If there are water supply lines in the garage, keep the doors closed to retain heat.

• Consider Pipe Heating Cables: For particularly vulnerable pipes, you can install electric heating cables that warm the pipes when temperatures drop.

Taking these precautions can help minimize the risk of your pipes freezing and bursting, which can lead to costly repairs and water damage.
